Status of Midwifery in Connecticut

In Connecticut, the practice of independent midwifery has been found to be distinct from the practice of nurse-midwifery, and is not currently regulated under the state's nurse-midwifery statute and regulations. About 10 independent (direct entry) midwives attend home births in the state, nine of whom are Certified Professional Midwives. Others have been certified by the state midwife association, The Alliance of Connecticut Midwives, and several are in the process of obtaining their CPMs.

Currently there are a small number of certified nurse-midwives attending homebirths in the state. Connecticut has one free-standing birth center in Danbury, staffed by two nurse midwives. There is also a NACC-accredited birth center affiliated with St. Mary's Hospital in Waterbury.
